Our singer of the day, Song Joong Ki (SJK), is a little bit of a reluctant singer for fan meetings but said he felt better about it after Park Bo Gum would rearrange the songs for him in a different key.
Originally SJK had been training to be a short track speed skater with his eye on the Olympic Games but an injury ended that dream during his first year of high school. He did play a speed skater in Triple, one of his earliest dramas. He is well known for his high marks in school and his near perfect SAT score and this secured him a place in Korea’s top university, Sungkyunkwan, where he majored in business administration and was an anchor on the university’s broadcasting station.
His role in the drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal brought him to the attention of Korean audiences and he gained even more recognition in Korean as the host of Music Bank and as a regular cast member on Running Man. Around the same time he released a book on health and skin care for men which was released in Korea, Japan, and China.
He said he felt his break out year was 2012 with roles in Werewolf Boy and Innocent Man as they gained him recognition abroad as well as South Korea.
In 2013 he enlisted in the military and served in an infantry unit assigned to patrol and conduct reconnaissance missions along the DMZ. Upon his discharge he continued in the role of a soldier by taking on the character of Special Forces Captain Yoo Si Jin in Descendants of the Sun. This show catapulted him into international stardom as the show became extremely popular in many countries. His next role in Battleship Island was a war drama as well to which he remarked he had been playing a soldier longer than he actually was one. His recent drama Arthdal Chronicals was shown in three parts on Netflix. He had been filming in Bogota, Columbia until production had to be halted due to the virus restrictions.
Our OST of the day is “Really” from Innocent Man.
