Seventeen is five

SEVENTEEN (세븐틴) turns five today.

They are a thirteen-member boy group under Pledis Entertainment who officially debuted on May 26, 2015. There are nine members who are Korean: S.Coup, Jeonghan, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, Seungkwan, and Dino. Joshua and Vernon are American, and Jun and The8 are Chinese.

Their first album, 17 Carat became the longest-charting K-pop album of the 2015, in the US and was the only rookie album to appear on Billboard's "10 Best K-Pop Albums of 2015" chart that year.

Though originally there were going to be 17 members, four (including Samuel Kim, who at 11 was considered by his mother to be too young) left before they debuted They now explain that the name 17 has to do with the group and the sub-units.

Members are divided into three sub-units, each with a different area of specialization: 'Hip-Hop', 'Vocal', and 'Performance'.

Hip-hop unit

  • S.Coups (에스쿱스) — group leader, hip-hop unit leader

  • Wonwoo (원우)

  • Mingyu (민규)

  • Vernon (버논)

Vocal unit

  • Jeonghan (정한)

  • Joshua (조슈아)

  • Woozi (우지) — vocal unit leader, song composer

  • DK (also known as Dokyeom) (도겸)

  • Seungkwan (승관)

Performance unit

  • Jun (준)

  • Hoshi (호시) — performance unit leader

  • The8 (디에잇)

  • Dino (디노)

Seventeen members write and composes their songs and are well known for their sharp choreography which can be tricky with so many members. Their debut track "Adore U" was written and produced by Woozi, and the accompanying performance choreography was devised by leader of the performance subunit, Hoshi. They continue to push themselves with increasingly challenging choreography like in the Don’t Wanna Cry performance.

Carats (their fan name) are also fond of their height difference. They also stand out for having some of the tallest and shortest members of any Kpop group. Mingyu at nearly 6’ 2” (186cm) is one of the taller Kpop singers but next to Woozi at 5’ 4 1/2” (164cm) his height is more pronounced.

Their best known song is probably 아주 (ahju) Nice or Very Nice in English.

Did you hear ahju nice or something else?

They have been putting up vlog episodes of their concert tour on their YouTube which you can watch here.

Congratulations S.Coup, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino on your Fifth Anniversary.
