Updated: Oct 30, 2020

Jang Keun Suk has been dubbed Asia’s Prince due to his popularity especially in China and Japan. He was the first non-Chinese actor to pass 10 million followers on Weibo and the first Hallyu star to be featured in a postage stamp in Japan.

He began his career as a child model at five and soon had a role in the sitcom, Selling Happiness. At 11 years of age he was sent to New Zealand to study English and Japanese at Nelson College. He returned to South Korea in 2004 to take a role in the sitcom Nonstop 4.

He had his first taste of popularity with the lead role in You’re Beautiful where he showed his vocal talents as the lead singer of the group, A.N.Jell. Jang also showed his music talent in the drama Mary Who Stayed Out All Night. His popularity grew more with roles in Pretty Man, Be My Pet and dual roles in Love Rain. His agency under-reported his taxes in 2015 which lead to a fine and he went on a hiatus in Korea after that, focussing largely on overseas activities. He expressed his disappointment at not being able to work in Korea saying that "You may be a hallyu star, but without a domestic base, it can feel empty".

He made his “comeback “ in Korea as host and mentor on Produce 101. Then shed his “pretty boy“ image in the historical drama The Royal Gambler. Just before his enlistment, in July 2018, he wrapped up another dual character role in the drama Switch - Change the World playing a prosecutor and a con artist.

He has produced a solo albums since 2011. In fact, Jang became the first male artist to top the Oricon Weekly Chart with a debut album, and the first time in Oricon history for a foreign male artist to claim such a feat in Japan. He then formed the group Team H with Big Brother and they completed a series of concerts throughout China, Thailand, Taiwan and America, while he continued create solo albums as well.

Our song choice today is Beautiful Day his OST from Pretty Man.
